Facebook is on a process to introduce its own AI voice assistant that can be worked on its Oculus headsets and Portal video calling device. Portal is a message focused smart display which was launched in November of last year. Facebook’s augmented and virtual reality team has been developing a voice AI since 2018 led by Ira Snyder in Redmond, Washington. This news is according to CNBC.

A spokesperson stated to the news organization.”We are working to develop voice and AI assistant technologies that may work across our family of AR/VR products including Portal, Oculus and future products.”

Facebook has former experience in developing AI assistants but they could not be rival to Apple, Google, Amazon and Microsoft. In 2015, it launched the M assistant for Messenger as AI integrations and bots including a chat-based virtual assistant. It scrapped it last year because it has limited success. Users can command by saying “Hey Portal” for its smart display but the device still needs Alexa for complex tasks. It is a costly experiment and needed a great human effort. Now the process is in its early stage. We have to wait to see is Facebook’s voice assistant is how much automated and there may be privacy issues too.
